Total Wireless Guide: Plans, Free Phones, iPhone Deals, Coverage, and Costs

Total Wireless Guide Plans, Free Phones, iPhone Deals, Coverage, and Costs
Reading Time: 10 minutes

A free phone can help you save today. The monthly bill decides how much you save over time. Before you choose Total Wireless, compare the device offer, service price, coverage, and rules for leaving with your phone.

Total Wireless sells prepaid service on Verizon’s network. Its options include unlimited phone plans, discounted devices, home internet, and a bring-your-own-phone offer. Eligible households can also check its Lifeline discount application.

The best choice depends on what you need. Keeping a working phone may cost less than taking a free device with a higher monthly plan. A family may save more by comparing the whole account price. Here is how to check both routes.

What Is Total Wireless?

Total Wireless is part of Verizon’s prepaid brand portfolio. You pay for service in advance, and its phone plans do not require a long-term service contract.

Verizon introduced a new Total Wireless plan lineup in May 2026. The current names are Total STARTER, Total MAX 5G BYO, Total MAX 5G, and Total ALL ACCESS. Older articles may still use earlier plan names and benefits.

Prepaid service and phone financing are separate. If you finance a device, read that loan agreement even though the wireless plan has no long-term contract.

Total Wireless Plans and Prices

The official comparison page displayed the following monthly prices with Auto Pay. Figures for multiple lines are account totals, not prices per person.

PlanOne lineTwo linesFour linesPhone hotspot allowance
Total STARTER$35$75$9510 GB at up to 5 Mbps
Total MAX 5G BYO$25$55$105Unlimited at up to 5 Mbps
Total MAX 5G$50$80$105Unlimited at up to 5 Mbps
Total ALL ACCESS$60$90$115Unlimited at up to 10 Mbps

All four include unlimited talk, text, and phone data. MAX and ALL ACCESS include 5G Ultra Wideband access where available with a compatible phone. Check the first payment and any offer restrictions before ordering.

Why You May See a Different BYO Price

At the time of review, Total’s dedicated BYO page advertised $20 per month with Auto Pay and a $30 first month, while its general comparison table showed $25.

The BYO promotion requires a compatible, unlocked phone. Its terms specify new customers, one offer per account, and Auto Pay for the full discount.

Because the official pages show different rates, confirm the offer attached to your order. Save the final price and terms before paying. Do not assume the lowest advertised rate applies to every account.

Which Plan Should You Compare First?

If your current phone works well, start with the BYO option. If you need a replacement, compare the required service plan for each device deal.

For a family, request one quote for all lines. A low single-line promotion does not always produce the lowest family bill.

Treat streaming perks as a bonus. Paying more for a feature you will not use does not improve the deal.

Auto Pay, Taxes, and the Five-Year Price Guarantee

Total advertises taxes and fees included in its phone plan rates. Device purchases, optional extras, and one-time charges still need a separate review.

The standard Auto Pay discount is $5 per account and starts the month after enrollment. A special promotion may have different discount terms.

The five-year price guarantee protects the qualifying plan rate. It excludes equipment, add-ons, promotional discounts, and perks. Service lapses or a move to an ineligible plan can affect the guarantee.

Ask for two numbers before you join: the amount due today and the amount due at renewal.

Does Total Wireless Offer Free Phones?

Yes. Select device promotions reduce the phone price to $0 when you meet the offer rules. Service still costs money.

Examples displayed during this review included:

PhoneAdvertised device offerListed service requirement
Samsung Galaxy A17 5GFreeA qualifying phone plan
Motorola moto g 2026FreeTotal MAX 5G or higher
TCL 50 XL NXTPAPER 5GFreeTotal MAX 5G or higher
Samsung Galaxy A36 5GFreeTotal MAX 5G three-month plan
Motorola edge 2025$49.99Total MAX 5G two-month plan

The page promotes switch offers. Check the product’s full terms for number-transfer rules, eligible carriers, stock, account limits, and required plan purchases.

What Does a Free Phone Actually Cost?

Add the phone price to the required service, any device tax, and any one-time charges. Then compare the renewal cost with a plan that lets you keep your current phone.

For example, a $25 monthly difference adds up to $300 over 12 months. That is a simple cost comparison, not a quote for a specific offer. A free device may still suit you, but the full-year cost makes the choice clearer.

Can You Get a Free iPhone From Total Wireless?

Free iPhone offers depend on the promotion. A past advertisement for a free iPhone 13 does not confirm that the same deal is available now.

During this review, Total listed the 128 GB iPhone 16e from $199.99 when switching and activating a Total ALL ACCESS three-month plan. Required service is separate from the advertised device price.

The same product page also displayed a Total Wireless Edge financing option over 24 months, with an advertised payment as low as $0 under its program requirements. That is a separate offer to examine.

Before accepting an iPhone deal, confirm:

  • The exact model, storage, and condition.
  • Whether you must transfer an existing number.
  • The plan you must buy and how much service is due upfront.
  • Whether the discount is immediate or earned through monthly credits.
  • What happens to credits or loan payments if you leave.
  • When the phone can be unlocked.

How Total Wireless Edge Financing Works

Total Wireless describes Edge as a device loan offered through Glow Financial Services. Available terms can span 12 or 24 monthly payments. Promotional credits may cover part or all of an eligible monthly loan payment when the offer conditions are met.

Review the loan balance, interest rate, total repayment amount, and credit conditions. A $0 down payment does not mean the device has no cost. A low advertised monthly payment also does not tell you what happens if you lose promotional credits.

Keep the loan agreement with your order receipt. Do not assume canceling wireless service cancels a device debt.

Coverage and Data Speeds

Total Wireless uses Verizon’s network. Check the official coverage map for your home, work, school, and usual travel routes.

A map is a useful starting point. Test calls and data indoors while you are within the applicable device return period. Building materials, terrain, your phone, and local traffic can affect service.

STARTER customers may experience lower data priority during busy periods. Total markets MAX and ALL ACCESS with premium unlimited data. Even so, a premium plan does not guarantee a fixed speed at every address.

Is Unlimited Hotspot the Same as Home Internet?

The hotspot speed limits in the plan table still apply. Unlimited data describes the allowance; it does not remove the speed limit.

Before relying on your phone for work or school, test the tasks you need. A connection that handles email may struggle with a large upload or several devices streaming at once.

Bring Your Own Phone, SIM Cards, and eSIM

You may be able to keep your current phone if it is unlocked and passes Total’s compatibility check. Check the exact device, not just its brand or model family.

Total offers physical SIM activation and eSIM for supported devices. An eSIM is a digital SIM, so compatible phones can activate without waiting for a card in the mail.

Before switching, confirm compatibility, unlock status, and the offer you qualify for. Back up your contacts, photos, and messages. Keep access to your current account until the transfer is complete.

How to Activate Service and Keep Your Number

Start through the official activation page. You can activate a purchased Total phone or follow the route for a compatible phone you already own.

For a number transfer, have your current carrier’s account details, transfer PIN, and billing information ready. Keep the old service active until the number moves. Canceling too soon can create a transfer problem.

After activation, test an outgoing call, an incoming call, texts, and mobile data. Set up voicemail and test hotspot if you plan to use it.

If the number does not transfer, ask support to check the account information before submitting the same request again.

Phone Unlocking: Check Before You Buy

An inexpensive phone can still be locked to its carrier. Unlocking rules matter if you plan to move the device to another network.

The published Verizon Value policy introduced a 365-day requirement for activations on or after January 20, 2026, with paid-service conditions and an unlock request. Earlier activations can fall under different rules.

Do not rely on an old article promising automatic unlocking after 60 days. Check your activation date and device through the official unlocking policy or Total’s unlock page.

Before paying, ask when your specific phone becomes eligible and what service you must maintain.

International Calling, Texting, and Roaming

Calling another country from the United States differs from using your phone while abroad.

STARTER lists international calling to selected destinations and roaming in Canada and Mexico. MAX and ALL ACCESS advertise broader international benefits, including roaming in more than 140 countries. Country lists and eligible numbers still need checking.

Total’s roaming page lists 10 GB of monthly roaming data, 300 calling minutes, and unlimited texts, with unlimited calling to and from Mexico. Your plan determines where those benefits work.

Check your destination before departure. Confirm any setup steps and whether your phone must first be activated on the U.S. network. Domestic unlimited data does not mean unlimited high-speed data overseas.

Total Wireless Home Internet

Home internet is a separate fixed wireless service. It requires an eligible address and a compatible Total router.

The listed standalone rate is $60 per month. Eligible phone-service bundles advertise $35 per month with Auto Pay, with a $45 first month on the availability page.

The router page displayed $24.99 with qualifying activation, compared with a $99.99 purchase price. Equipment is separate from service.

Published download ranges are 20–200 Mbps on 5G and 20–50 Mbps on LTE, depending on location and service conditions. The plan includes unlimited data.

Check your address before buying equipment. Ask Total before moving the service to another address. Test the connection where you will use it, especially if your household needs video calls or large uploads.

Tablet Plans and Portable Hotspots

Total also lists separate tablet plans and mobile hotspot plans.

A tablet plan connects a compatible cellular tablet. A portable hotspot shares a cellular connection with other devices. Both differ from using the hotspot feature built into your phone.

Check the selected device’s plan price, data allowance, renewal period, and speed limits. The smartphone plan’s unlimited allowance does not automatically apply to a separate hotspot or tablet line. Current data-only prices were not clearly displayed in the public pages reviewed, so confirm them before purchase.

Does Total Wireless Offer a Lifeline Discount?

Yes. Total has an official Lifeline application route. Its linked enrollment site describes a $10 monthly discount, subject to approval and program terms. Start with Total’s Lifeline page, which links to its benefit application portal.

You may qualify through SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, or certain Tribal programs. Income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines is another route.

Lifeline allows one benefit per household. If you already use it through another company, ask about a transfer rather than adding a second benefit.

Ask which plans qualify, whether the discount works with your selected promotion, and what your final bill will be. Benefit approval does not itself guarantee a free iPhone or a completely free plan.

The Affordable Connectivity Program ended on June 1, 2024. Lifeline remains a separate program. Old ACP offers should not be used to calculate a current bill.

Disney+, Cloud Storage, and Other Extras

ALL ACCESS includes Disney+ Premium while you maintain eligible service and complete the required activation. Check how an existing Disney+ subscription will be handled before linking accounts. Total Wireless Disney+ information and current offer terms

The 2026 lineup lists 100 GB of cloud storage for MAX plans and 1 TB for ALL ACCESS. Keep a separate backup of important files if you plan to change service.

Some plans also list a monthly Western Union transfer-fee benefit. Exchange rates, taxes, and other charges may still apply. A waived transfer fee does not mean the transfer has no cost.

Total Rewards and Phone Protection

Rewards

Total Rewards offers ways to earn points and redeem qualifying rewards. Referral points have waiting periods; the current referral terms require both accounts to remain active for 60 days.

Points have no cash value. Check your balance and redemption rules before counting on them to pay for service.

Optional Protection

The protection page lists Total Wireless Protect at $5 per month and Protect+ at $8 per month, plus tax where applicable. Protect+ adds loss and theft coverage.

Repair and replacement fees, approved devices, and claim limits vary. Compare the yearly premiums and possible service fee with the cost of replacing your phone.

Login, Payments, and Customer Service

Use the Log in or My Account link on the official Total Wireless website. The Total Wireless app also provides account tools, Auto Pay options, rewards information, store search, and support.

For customer service, call 1-866-663-3633. Total lists phone support from 8 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Eastern, seven days a week. Its 611611 text service offers self-service help.

Before contacting support, have your order number and a short description of the issue ready. Use official channels for account details. If you need in-person help, use the site’s store locator and ask whether the store can handle your specific issue.

Returns, Warranty, and Canceling Service

For devices bought directly from Total online, the published return window is 30 days from delivery, subject to condition, packaging, and other requirements. You generally pay return shipping. Retail purchases follow the seller’s return policy.

New phones generally have a one-year limited warranty; Apple handles the warranty for new iPhones. Listed refurbished-device warranties are generally 90 days. Standard phone service plans and activation kits are nonrefundable.

If you leave, transfer your number before ending service. Porting out ends the line’s Total service, and unused service time is lost. Review Auto Pay for any lines that remain.

Is Total Wireless Worth Considering?

Based on the published plans and offers, Total is worth comparing if Verizon works well in your area, you want prepaid billing, or you need a phone deal with local store support.

Look more closely at the limits if you need fast hotspot service, want to switch a newly purchased phone soon, or need reliable indoor coverage at a specific address.

Ask for the full first-year cost. Include the device, service, required upfront months, and optional extras. That comparison is more useful than choosing by the largest discount on a banner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Total Wireless the same as Verizon?

It is part of Verizon’s prepaid business and uses Verizon’s network. Its plans, billing, device offers, and customer support are handled through Total Wireless.

Can existing customers get free phones?

Check the specific upgrade or device offer. A promotion for new customers who switch is not automatically available to an existing line.

Can I keep my current phone number?

You can request a transfer of an eligible number. Keep your old line active and use the correct account details and transfer PIN.

Is a free Total Wireless phone a government phone?

A carrier’s device promotion is separate from Lifeline eligibility. Confirm the phone offer and any benefit discount as separate parts of the order.

Does prepaid mean no credit check for phone financing?

No. Device financing has its own application and approval terms. Review them before accepting a loan.

Is the cheapest advertised price guaranteed for everyone?

No. It may require a new account, an eligible phone, Auto Pay, or a specific sales channel. Use the final written order to confirm your price.

Conclusion

Total Wireless gives you several ways to lower a phone bill: keep a compatible device, compare family rates, choose a qualifying phone offer, or check Lifeline eligibility. Each route has its own costs and rules.

Start with coverage and the monthly amount you can afford. Then check the device price, first payment, renewal rate, and unlocking terms. A plan that fits your budget for the full year is the deal that matters.
